You get playing time! You get playing time! Everybody gets playing time!

Oprah cliches aside, the NFL preseason allows football fans to get an early shot at feeding their gridiron addiction, while hundreds of league hopefuls don pads and helmets and take their shot on the field.

These last four weeks of exhibition play allowed for 14 of Utah State’s own to see the field, whether it be to earn a spot, secure one, or get in a few warmups.

Maurice Alexander, Linebacker

Buffalo Bills

Alexander secured a roster spot with the Bills as the second-string strongside linebacker behind Matt Milano. He recorded a stat in all four preseason games with eight total tackles, two solo tackles and two pass defenses.

Jalen Davis, Cornerback

Arizona Cardinals

After leading the BYU Cougars in touchdown catches in 2017 (we will never let this go), Davis recorded stats in each preseason game for the Miami Dolphins with six total tackles, three solo tackles and one pass defense. The Dolphins, however, did not hold on to the second-year cornerback, instead waiving him at the deadline. Davis has announced on Twitter that he is headed to the Arizona Cardinals and his agency’s marketing director, Dane Reese, confirmed Davis signed a contract for the Cards’ practice squad.

Marwin Evans, Safety

Free Agent

Evans saw some action in the preseason with the Seattle Seahawks. He recorded two tackles, both of them solo tackles. The Seahawks waived Evans last week before the deadline.

Kyler Fackrell, Linebacker

Green Bay Packers

Fackrell secured his spot once again as the second-string middle linebacker for the Packers. Having been somewhat established with the Green Bay roster, Fackrell played limited time and recorded a single tackle and a hit on the quarterback. He fills the depth chart just behind the newly-signed Preston Smith.

Tyler Larsen, Center

Carolina Panthers

Larsen was, at one point, slated to be the starting center for quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers following the retirement of veteran Ryan Kalil. Instead, head coach Ron Rivera kept Larsen at the backup spot on the depth chart and brought in Matt Paradis. Rivera had praise for Larsen after he started 15 games last season, saying he did “very, very well.”

Nevin Lawson, Cornerback

Oakland Raiders

Lawson inked a deal with the Raiders over the spring and, soon after, was suspended four games after testing positive for PED’s. Leaving aside that my Raiders simply cannot have nice things, Lawson’s suspension still allowed him to play in the preseason, and he stood out with 14 total tackles, 11 solo tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass defense. He currently holds the third-string spot at right-side cornerback, but it remains to be seen if he will move up once he is eligible to play.

Dallin Leavitt, Safety

Oakland Raiders

Leavitt’s stats jumped off the page for Oakland thanks to a good chunk of field time. The former practice squad player recorded 12 total tackles, 10 solo tackles and two pass defenses. Leavitt earned a sport on the Raiders’ roster as the fourth-string strong-side linebacker.

Donald Penn, Offensive Tackle

Washington Redskins

It pains me to see a different team name next to Penn’s name after he played tough for Oakland for the last few years, but the veteran left tackle left town and is listed as the backup left tackle for the Redskins. It is expected, however, that Penn will start the beginning of the season as the incumbent, Trent Williams, is listed as out on the depth chart and is reported to be in disputes with the front office.

Dax Raymond, Tight End

Chicago Bears

One of the Aggie’s rookie representatives this year, Raymond’s fate was unkind. Raymond left the field in the fourth preseason game and is reported to have a head injury. The Bears have placed him on injured reserve, but he still managed to keep a spot on the final roster at fourth-string tight end. Raymond had three catches for 22 yards on five targets during the preseason.

Patrick Scales, Long Snapper

Chicago Bears

Patrick Scales is securely on the Bears’ roster as the lone long snapper. Obviously, there are not really any stats to report on this, but rest assured our friend Scales will continue to rocket-launch footballs to expectant punters out of his backside for more money than most college professors make. Football is great.

Hunter Sharp, Wide Receiver

Free Agent

Sharp had a decent preseason for a journeyman receiver. He recorded four catches for 42 yards on seven targets, but was injured during the preseason and did not make the Cincinnati Bengals final roster. He reached an injury settlement with Cincinnati before being waived.

Darwin Thompson, Running Back

Kansas City Chiefs

Thompson, a promising late-rounder in the recent draft, made several highlights during this preseason and has Chiefs’ fans’ attention as a potential young star. Thompson recorded stats in three contests and rushed 12 times for 60 yards. He also caught three passes for 38 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown. Almost as much coverage as his touchdown catch was a nine-yard run that saw him break at least four tackles against the Bengals. Chiefs correspondents believe Thompson may be a secret weapon in head coach Andy Reid’s speed-reliant offense.

Nick Vigil, Linebacker

Cincinnati Bengals

Vigil already established himself on the depth chart for the Bengals, but had a few showings this preseason. He recorded two total tackles, both solo, in limited time and is slotted at the starting position at strong-side linebacker.

Bobby Wagner, Linebacker

Seattle Seahawks

As if the future Hall of Famer really needs the practice, Wagner has a secure hold on the starting middle linebacker position on the Seattle defense. He showed up a few times in the preseason and recorded two total tackles, both of them solo.

Kerwynn Williams, Running Back

Free Agent

Williams had a decent preseason with the New Orleans Saints. He rushed eight times for 25 yards and caught three passes for eight yards. It was not enough for the Saints, however, and he was waived at the deadline.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way–in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens or a tale of two Utah State football halves versus Wisconsin?

Last Friday got invariably ugly. The Badgers were far and away the better team and it was fairly miraculous that the Aggies were able to make a full half of the game competitive. Moving to this Thursday night versus Idaho State, the litmus test for this USU team will be if they can flip that script to their favor.

To be short, Idaho State is not very good. That’s not a shot at them simply being an FCS team; that’s a shot at them being dead last in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll by both the coaches and the media. The Bengals are rebuilding under first-year head coach Rob Phenicie after going 2-9 in both of the previous two seasons. Simply put, this is a game the Aggies should win handily. If not, then let the sirens wail.

The Bengals have faced four FBS teams over the past two seasons and have been outscored by an average of 50 points per contest. After being outscored by 49 against Wisconsin, this is the opportunity to right the ship and correct bad habits before heading into two “measuring stick” games against Wake Forest and San Jose State.

Last season, Idaho State allowed over 225 yards rushing per game and over five yards per carry. The Aggies’ stable of running backs should have a much easier time finding running room than last Friday. An offensive line that looked quite promising against Wisconsin will have a much easier time creating running lanes for the likes of Lajuan Hunt and Tonny Lindsay, as well as maintaining a clean pocket for much maligned quarterback Kent Myers.

This game will be huge for Myers heading into the next stretch of games for USU. After throwing for 219 yards with three interceptions against the Badgers, Myers’ confidence can’t be too high right now. For Utah State to have a decent shot next week against Wake Forest and heading into Mountain West play thereafter, Myers will have to be sharp and protective of the football. Any residue of the Wisconsin game need to be cleared from memory, and a game against an inferior FCS opponent should be an effective remedy. Expect Myers to rack up a decent completion percentage and a respectable yardage total in this game. Most important though will be Myers’ turnover total. Myers pressed the issue far too much in the second half versus Wisconsin, leading to two very poor interceptions. Those mistakes need to be avoided from here on out for the Aggies to have any hopes of returning to a bowl game.

Defensively, life versus the Bengals should also be much easier. The Aggies held up versus Wisconsin until their lack of depth took its toll and the Badgers were able to wear down the USU defense. Both the secondary and the front seven shouldn’t be nearly as tested versus Idaho State, allowing for invaluable experience to be imparted throughout the roster, especially for an inexperienced front seven still looking to form a cohesive unit.

If I’m making Thursday’s game versus Idaho State sound like a glorified practice, that’s because it virtually is. The Bengals shouldn’t pose much of a threat to the Aggies, if any, allowing USU the chance to fine-tune systems and schemes in an in-game setting and prepare for tougher tests against Wake Forest next week and San Jose State to start conference play the week after.

And if Utah State is unable to prove themselves superior to the Bengals?

Well, it will definitely be the worst of times.

What a difference a year makes.

Three-hundred and sixty-five and some odd days ago, Utah State was flying high at a 4-1 mark in the Mountain West and at 5-3 on the season. Then junior running back Devante Mays was tearing up turf fields across the conference, taking defenders with him as he inched ever closer to his career-high 966 yards and 9 touchdowns. Quarterback Kent Myers was also having himself a year as the de-facto starter in his sophomore campaign, throwing for 1,593 yards and 16 touchdowns to his supporting cast while achieving a sky-high 151-point passer rating – something that echoed even the NFL’s highest mark in that regard.

But in Laramie on Saturday, Myers and Mays both found themselves not basking in the spotlight at War Memorial Stadium, but rather on the cold, hard, bench. They could only watch as Utah State fell to Wyoming 52-28, marking the Aggies sixth loss of the season and the seventh straight road defeat.

Mays, desperately trying to claw back from lingering knee and ankle injuries, rejoined his teammates only to once again re-injure the nagging ailments as he continues to try to salvage what is left of his senior season. Myers, officially designated with an undisclosed injury by Utah State head coach Matt Wells, was confined to the sidelines as his backup, Damion Hobbs, looked to rectify a bleak situation.

What a difference indeed.

Hobbs found himself under center facing an overcomeable deficit ahead of him down by just two touchdowns late in the third quarter; but Hobbs was just a reliever for a team that was getting beaten, battered and belittled by the Cowboys – a team in which just a year ago USU defeated with a mirrored score of 58-27 in Logan.

It wasn’t long before the Aggies found themselves on the receiving end of a type of revenge that can only come from four-straight losses – four straight embarrassing losses at that. Wyoming came out of the gates with a take-no-prisoners mentality, cruising with little effort to four touchdowns on its opening five drives – 21 points of which came unanswered.

At halftime, the scoreboard already read 35-7 – the lone Utah State score coming via a Hobbs designed run at the goal line. At this point in the game, USU had also been outgained by 217 yards, with Wyoming nabbing 315 yards while the Aggies only amounted 98.

Out of the break however, the Aggies decided they weren’t going to go quietly as they flipped the script on the Cowboys, if not momentarily.

Wells and company forced Wyoming into two straight punts out of halftime and intercepted Josh Allen’s pass on the third drive. Using that momentum, Utah State found the end zone on its first three drives out of halftime.

But the phrase sputtered and died is appropriate after noting that the Aggies success was short-lived.

In its final three drives, with Hobbs now calling the shots offensively, the men in fighting white missed on a 47-yard field goal; had an interception returned 56-yards into their own territory; and missed on fourth down to seal the defeat. In that span, Wyoming scored twice, once on a field goal and again with a touchdown.

Hobbs would finish 7 for 16 through the air for 68 yards, and 6 carries, 24 yards and three scores on the ground. Before being pulled, Myers went 17 for 29 for 235 yards and a lone touchdown.

It was wide receiver Ron’Quavion Tarver who pulled down the most passes from the two-headed attack with eight receptions for 104 yards. Behind Tarver was fellow wide out Rayshad Lewis and tight end Wyatt Houston. Lewis totaled seven catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Houston tallied five catches for 37 yards.

Wyoming’s offensive marks saw Allen achieve a career-high single-game four touchdowns, while throwing for 261 yards. Running back Brian Hill again surpassed the century mark, finishing with 142 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Utah State will return to Logan next week for Senior Night against New Mexico, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
