The survey showed (93.8%) of respondents “indicated that outdoor recreation options and/or access to wilderness and public lands were moderately, very, or extremely important to them.” The survey showed in 2021, Utah tourists had spent $10.56 billion. This revenue supported 130,600 jobs and “resulted in $1.81 billion in state & local tax.”

The survey included questions about air pollution, water, heritage, people’s perception of environmental problems, Great Salt Lake, energy, recreational public lands, environmental issues and standard demographic questions. How is it in conversation, if at all, with any policy or other areas of concern?”

Bruner got involved when Schad asked faculty to submit questions to be on the survey. <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559740":276}">

“We both wanted to ensure the poll results were communicated,” Bruner said. “So we want this to be able to help environmental organizations, people on the ground doing the work, and help policymakers understand where Utahn’s priorities lie. So, the goal is to use this research to make a difference.”

Already, graduate students are using this data to create a master’s thesis.

“If students are interested in involvement, they can contact me. Madsen, the founder of this effort, hosted the meeting and addressed the concern for the employment rates of women in Utah.

“I believe that one of my life callings is to strengthen the impact of girls and women in this world — including in Utah, so I feel called to do this work,” Madsen said.

And although the pandemic has caused the economy and all types of workers to take a hit, this meeting showed that women seem to have taken it the worst.

Jobs were lost, education was disrupted, and everyday life at home became harder than ever before.

The meeting also specified that COVID-19 has affected working women in our surrounding communities more than most others. The unemployment rate for women during the pandemic nearly doubled the rate of working men.

To understand what women were facing, a survey was sent out in January 2021 to all women over the age of 20.

One of the questions from the in-depth survey asked, “If you are not currently working for pay or if you stopped working at any time after March 2020, what is/was your main reason for doing so?”

A common response from the women was that their employer had lost business and couldn’t afford to keep them hired.

Another major reason for the unemployment rate increasing is women having to leave work to take care of their children that were no longer able to go to school or daycare.

Taylor Pollock, a freshman at Utah State University, expressed the impact that COVID-19 had on her mother and family.

“My mom is a licensed cosmetologist and a master esthetician,” Pollock said. “She works at a day spa and at some point, during Covid, she was not deemed an essential business so she had to stop working. Luckily for us, we live with our grandma, so we weren’t kicked out of our house.”

Pollock also said there was more tension present in her home when everybody was stuck inside all the time.

This ripple effect from the pandemic also led numerous mothers, chiefly single mothers, to experience various mental health problems.

On the flip side, there were women working harder than they ever had during the pandemic but their efforts didn’t match their wages.

For example, those who worked for food services and those in the medical field saw a massive increase in workload without much relief or reward. This resulted in many women feeling burnt out at the end of the day, especially those who have young children at home.

But results show there were only a small percentage of women that felt overly concerned about money.

One potential reason for this could be because this past January, women were able to get back on their feet and receive support from the CARES act and other resources.

Madsen expressed that efforts are still continuing and that companies are making an effort to support workers — especially women.

“There have been back to work learn and work programs through COVID-19 to help people retool and learn to shift careers/jobs,” she said. “COVID funds have been around during part of it to keep childcare facilities and providers open to take children.”

Some of these efforts include allowing flexibility in work location and hours. Free mental health counseling has also been provided and paid sick leave for many employees was increased.

Brielle.carr@usu.edu

The post Utah women in the workforce see negative effects from COVID-19 appeared first on The Utah Statesman.

More than half of USU students don’t know how to report sexual assault, survey says

Carter Moore

All

Campus News

News

investigation

misconduct

police

report

savvi

sex

sexual assault

Survey

Title IX

USU

Utah State

Utah State University

Data from Utah State University’s Campus Climate Survey reveals more than half of Utah State University students don’t know how…

The post More than half of USU students don’t know how to report sexual assault, survey says appeared first on The Utah Statesman.

Data from Utah State University’s Campus Climate Survey reveals more than half of Utah State University students don’t know how to report sexual misconduct.

According to the survey data, which asks students questions about their experiences with sexual misconduct — specifically nonconsensual sexual contact — only 5 percent of victims said they filed formal complaints with the university.

“We need to improve communication to students on how to file a report and how that works,” said Sexual Misconduct Information Coordinator Amanda DeRito.

What percentage of #SexualMisconductSurvey respondents reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact since arriving at USU?

— Utah Statesman (@UtahStatesman) September 26, 2017

She added that students need to know where to find services to help them and remove the barriers for students to access those services.

USU is on the lowest side of reporting, according to the study.

[polldaddy poll=9838928]

In a nationwide study conducted in 2015 by the Association of American Universities, 27 schools said students who had experienced sexual misconduct reported to officials between five and 28 percent of cases.

“Most of the information we had until this survey was anecdotal,” DeRito said. “We know who is being seen by SAAVI (Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information Center) or who is being seen by CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services), but we didn’t have a sense of what was going on in the greater community. Now we have a sense of that — we have a way to measure if we are improving.”

According to the data, 10,502 students responded to the survey, which was sent to all USU students in April. This represents 45 percent of the USU population. Of those responses, 93 percent of USU students feel they are safe on campus when it comes to nonconsensual sexual contact. 7.4 percent of students reported they have been the victim of nonconsensual sexual contact since arriving at USU.

“Because of this survey we are able to redirect resources across campus in order to help students,” said Eric Warren, USU media relations director. “It became pretty clear that many students don’t know what services are out there for them if they’re victims.”

Resources for sexual misconduct victims across campus have been increased in the past year, due to high-profile cases and a concern for student well-being, DeRito said.

“What we’re doing is looking at how we can best serve students,” she said.

USU has a variety of resources available to meet different student needs. These include reporting to the university, reporting to law enforcement or simply seeking counseling services provided by SAAVI or CAPS, or Counseling and Psychological Services, located in the Taggart Student Center.

“The reason we have all these resources is because everyone processes it differently,” Warren said. “Saying ‘everyone should do this first’ would not be helpful, so providing options is our best way to go about it.”

DeRito agreed, adding “If a student just needs someone to talk to and no one else should find out, they need to go to one of our confidential resources, and that would be SAAVI…They provide advocacy and counseling, and will actually walk through the process with someone.”

SAAVI provides information, counseling and assistance to victims of violent or non-violent sexual misconduct and will keep all victim information confidential. Located in the Student Health and Wellness Center 119, SAAVI can be a vital resource to a student dealing with sexual assault.

“One of the places where people can enter this is through the police department. The USU police department will also refer you to all these different resources as well,” Warren said.

At any point where a victim tells a university official or employee, they will be guided through the reporting process and can remain anonymous, if desired.

DeRito said it is important for students to know the steps, as no one expects unwanted sexual contact to happen to them.

“Just because you may not go to a party, or may not drink, you still need to think about these things.”

—carter.moore@aggiemail.usu.edu

@carterthegrreat

See full report here:

2017 CAMPUS CLIMATE SURVEY ON SEXUAL MISCONDUCT by Utah Statesman on Scribd

The post More than half of USU students don’t know how to report sexual assault, survey says appeared first on The Utah Statesman.

How to keep your relationship alive

Keeton Alder

All

Lifestyles

Student Life

Boyfriend

Engaged

Facebook

Girlfriend

Partner

relationships

Survey

Valentine's Day

We asked the questions that may help you keep your relationship strong and thriving well past the next Valentine's Day.

The post How to keep your relationship alive appeared first on The Utah Statesman.

How to keep your relationship alive

A short survey

Another February fourteenth has come and gone. Couples all over bought roses, necklaces and enough candy Sweethearts to stretch from the love capital of the world Rome, to Valentine, Arizona at least 40 times, according to a study done by The History Channel. It seems like relationships all around are thriving as they are celebrating valentine’s day. But what if you were not part of the 62 percent of adults who say they celebrated the holiday? What if this year, you fell into the “single” category? Don’t worry, you are not alone, and because you are not alone I decided to do a little research and figure out what keeps a relationship alive.

I asked 10 questions to Utah college students via a Facebook survey to determine what keeps a relationship alive. I split up the data by female and male responses. These were free-response questions and we got a lot of different answers, but there are some interesting patterns.

1) What is the number one thing you look for in a potential partner?

For this question, most of the male responses fall into three main categories: personality, emotional connection, and personal values. But the female responses were a little different: their highest three categories were personality, personal values and trust. Women tended to place more emphasis on emotional and spiritual characteristics.

2) Is it okay if your partner tells his/her friends when you get in a fight?

From here on out the pink graphs are female responses and the blue are male responses.
