Three Aggies named to all-Mountain West softball team

On May 6, the Mountain West announced its annual all-conference softball honors, with a trio of players from Utah State University making the 27-player list.

Freshman outfielder Mazie Macfarlane, junior outfielder Stephanie Reed and sophomore pitcher Kapri Toone were all named to the conference’s first list, which was modified due to the season’s cancelation. Instead of two teams being selected, this year’s group consisted of one team composed of three players from each club in the conference.

Utah State head coach Steve Johnson congratulated all three players and remarked on their performances during the season. “We had a lot of players contribute in key spots throughout the season, but these three really stood out,” he said

The honors mark the first all-conference awards for all three players.

Macfarlane, who Johnson called “the definition of a competitor,” led her team with 15 runs and 11 RBI. She also ranked second on the Aggies for batting average, posting a .329 over the 24-game campaign.

Reed, who held the team’s best batting average, at .382, hit three doubles, four triples and one home run. As a starter at center field, in all 24 games, she recorded 56 putouts and was hit by a pitch a conference-high nine times.

Toone was exceptional at the mound this season, boasting a 2.35 ERA performance over 65.2 innings pitched. She played in 15 games, finishing the season with an 8-1 record, which included a no-hitter against San Diego during the Golden State Classic. Of her six complete games, Toone earned four shutouts as well.

Utah State finished its abbreviated season with a 13-11 record.
