Time to hang up those clubs

Golf concluded their fall season with a 13th place finish on Halloween.

Even with continued improvement throughout the two-day competition, the Utah State University golf team couldn’t seem to pull out of their low standing on the final day.

The Bill Cullum Intercollegiate in Simi Valley, Calif., took place on Oct 30 and 31. Loyola Marymount University’s golf team claimed the win with a finishing score of 873, making them number one out of 14 teams.

Sophomore Devin Daniels held the top team ranking of 41 and he concluded his three-round play with a total of 230. Daniels’ final round score of 75 became the Aggies’ best score for an individual in the tournament.

Senior Jake Blair followed Daniels with a tie for a 48th place ranking. After match play against Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah last week, Blair said he expected the team to do well as they headed into their last tournament of the year.

Leading the team multiple times this season, senior Preston Otte, posted a score of 234 tying him for 56th overall, placing him in third place among team scores. Heading into this tournament Otte lead the Aggies with a 72.44 average.

At the beginning of the fall season Coach Dean Johansen mentioned the team’s solid camaraderie. With players enjoying each other’s company the team has a greater chance of winning, said Johansen.

Other golf happenings during the fall season included an Aggie win against SUU in the Southern Utah Duel, and an 8th place finish at the Idaho Fall Classic in Moscow, Idaho.

The USU golf schedule will continue in March when they attend the Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif. They will also compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships, following their regular season play, in Reno, NV on April 30, May 1 and 2.
