Aggie fans help men’s basketball team rout the Rams
LOGAN—The Utah State University men’s basketball team (14-1, 2-0 MW) beat the #13 Colorado State Rams (13-2, 1-1 MW) Saturday night, 77-72.
“You guys have seen it,” Danny Sprinkle said in a postgame interview. “When they get the crowd going, people can say what they want. It’s worth more than three points.”
Great Osobor led the Aggies with 20 points, and Isaiah Stevens led the Rams with 21 points.
Aggie fans wore gloves to the game to make their claps louder.
The game started with Darius Brown II scoring a 3-pointer. Five minutes into the first half, the Rams led the Aggies 10-7.
Osobor made the first free throws of the game at 13:58.
The Aggies struggled during the first half to score. With 10 minutes left in the first half, they had a scoring drought of three minutes.
Sprinkle called a timeout, and this seemed to push the Aggies as they scored four points out of the huddle. These points had put them 1 for 10 on field goal shots.
With 3:47 left in the half, the Aggies trailed the Rams 21-27. The Rams had 8 fouls to the Aggies’ 4.
Javon Jackson shot the first bonus free throws for the Aggies with 26 seconds left in the half.
The half ended with the Rams leading the Aggies 32-28. The Aggies struggled in the first half to make a shot, with a field goal percentage of 28.1% compared to the Rams’ 40%.
The second half started with a dunk from Osobor. Shortly after the second half started, Aggies improved their FG% by 6.1%.
Aggies led the Rams for the first time in the second half with 15:26 left at a scoreline of 42-41.
The second half showed a different game with both teams fighting to stay on top.
Aggie Mason Falslev made a layup through traffic to tie up the score 55-55.
Isaac Johnson hit a three with five minutes left, then stole the ball on the other end to return possession to the Aggies.
A few plays later, Osobor blocked a Ram.
Ram Patrick Cartier fouled out with 1:56 left on the clock, putting the fans into a frenzy.
Aggies called a timeout after CSU put a full-court press on them with 1:42 left in the game.
Then Ram Nique Clifford fouled out with 1:14 left in the game, and the stadium erupted.
With one minute remaining, the Rams were left to just foul the Aggies, who were in the double bonus.
The Aggies closed out the game with a score of 77-72.
In a postgame interview, Josh Uduje spoke on how the fans turned the tide of the game.
“Spectrum magic is real,” he said. “We had two guys foul out. Just hearing them chant ‘Left, right, left, right’ is crazy, you know? I think that really is what kickstarted our run.”
Osobor also spoke on the power of the HURD on the team.
“OK, there’s three things certain in life: death, taxes and the HURD,” he said, “and they were big time for us tonight.”
Danny Sprinkle praised the crowd and how crucial they were to win this game.
“We just had to keep pushing and pushing and get to the last five minutes, and then just let the crowd take over,” he said.
Aggies play the Wyoming Cowboys on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Spectrum.
