TRACK AND FIELD DOES WELL AT WILSON MOTOR INTIVE
Utah State’s track and field team finished with 12 individual winners Friday afternoon as it hosted the Wilson Motor Invitational in the Fieldhouse to begin the 2008 season. Five universities competed in the invitational, including the University of Utah, Idaho State University, Utah Valley University and Southern Utah University. The afternoon’s events began with the the women’s 3,000-meter race. The Aggies got off to a slow start by losing this event but soon recovered. The highlight of the afternoon was the women’s mile. USU senior Stacie Dorius, former Western Athletic Conference champion in the 3,000, trailed most of the race, but as the last lap began, she slowly made her move.
“That’s how I like to run.” Dorius said, referring to running from behind. “I took off at a good pace and just hoped I could hold it.”
Her final stretch drew more crowd noise than any event of the afternoon. She finished with a time of 5:13.
About 10 minutes later, USU sophomore Jason Holt won the men’s mile with a time of 4:21, with the second place finisher coming in a little more than four seconds behind him.
Other USU women winners featured Maria Halton in the 60-meter run, Erin Stratton in the 800, Ashlee Cannon in the 60 hurdles and Katie Thatcher in the 400 hurdles.
USU men’s winners included David Loomis and Palmer Hawkins in pole vault, Silas Pimental in the 60, Nick Karren in the 400 and Andrew Nicolli in the 800.
