TSC will become Bourbon StreetBy Shelby Dobson
The first floor of the Taggart Student Center will soon be transformed.
The hallway will become Bourbon Street of New Orleans for the Mardis Gras celebration Saturday night.
“It’s one of our best activities,” Kathy Leslie, Associated Students of Utah State University activities vice president, said.
For five years the Student Activities Board (STAB) has put on Mardis Gras night. Previously there was a casino night, but it didn’t attract enough students and Mardis Gras has a lot more to offer, Leslie said.
Last year about 4,500 students came.
“It’s becoming one of the biggest activities of the year,” she said.
A R&B and hip hop band called Legato from San Francisco will play at the event.
Murrieta, an Indi-punk band, will play along with another punk band, Amnesty, in the Skyroom.
A casino in the lounge on the second floor of the TSC will feature 21, Texas Hold’em and Roulette.
The activities committee hired a company from Salt Lake to present a drag queens show. There will also be a DJ and dancing at the Hub.
Caricatures, palm readings, popcorn, cotton candy, soft drinks and of course, beads will all be included for free.
“It takes about a day and a half to set up,” Leslie said, talking about the preparation of Bourbon Street and all the other decorations.
The event is free for students with a valid student identification card. It is from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday.
Mardis Gras will be the finale of Traditions Week. The official Mardis Gras holiday takes place on Tuesday.
