Ultimate team captures consolation bracket crown

Members of the Utah State ultimate frisbee team took Monday off.

They needed to after walking, running rather, away with B Bracket Championship in their home tournament over the weekend.

“You feel pretty sore on Monday,” Isaac Westfield, the club president, said. “I was pretty much hobbling around campus all day.”

Westfield, who said he has played baseball and ran track all his life, said nothing compares to the physical strain of an ultimate tournament.

“After [a tournament],” he said,” you’re beat.”

Coming out sluggish in its first game Sunday, the Ags fell behind early to Colorado College. The team eventually found its rhythm, but by that time it was too late. The Aggies fell 13-6.

“We just started slow,” Westfield said. “It’s pretty common on Sunday. Everybody is still recovering from the day before.”

With an opening loss Sunday, the first day of bracket play, Utah State was relegated to the consolation bracket where it dominated the next two games, beating both Idaho State and Wyoming by scores of 13-5 to claim the consolation crown.

“Nobody seemed quite as into it Sunday,” Westfield said.

Boise State beat tournament favorites Colorado State to take home the championship in the eight-team event. Other teams that participated included BYU, Colorado Christian and Montana State.

Overall, Westfield said he was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We’re actually starting over,” he said. “I’m the only former player on this team. They’re actually looking really, really good.”

Westfield credited newcomers Chris Pitts and Spencer Noorba for picking up some of the slack.

“Spencer has a little prior experience,” Westfield said. “Chris just kind of came on, and he’s turned into a monster player.”

Saturday USU jumped out early beating a Colorado Christian squad with no reserves – what’s referred to as “savage seven.”

“They’re my favorite by far,” Westfield said of the Christian team. “They just come out here for fun. They’re brand new and they’re playing savage. So, you’ve got to give them credit.”

The Ags were less successful in their next game, a matchup with CSU. Westfield said his team was just outplayed by the better, more experienced Rams.

“We got stomped,” Westfield said. “It’s definitely a lack of experience. They have everything set up before they even throw it.”

USU was able to capitalize in games against ISU and Wyoming on Saturday.

Westfield said the team won’t be participating in any competitions until the Pearl Harbor Tournament in December, but will still be holding practices Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. on the Quad.
