Undergraduate research activities planned
Undergraduate students from every college who have done research can be involved in several different activities this semester.
“The calendar for undergraduate research activities is very rich this year,” according to a press release issued by Joyce Kinkead, vice provost for undergraduate studies and research.
Posters on the Hill is one initiative started last January. Students from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences present a paper on their research as a means of presenting their findings.
Students from other colleges also present a poster usually three feet by four feet and includes a picture of the student’s project or experiment and a paper about the poster to accompany it.
“The posters are beautiful,” Kinkead said.
One objective for Posters on the Hill is to make sure all the colleges are represented, Kinkead said.
Students have been submitting posters and papers for Posters on the Hill, and the official due date is Nov. 1, she said.
For those students who may be daunted by the due date, research projects for the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) are due Nov. 30.
“Undergraduate students who engage in research, scholarship and creative activities have opportunities to present at two national venues,” according to the press release.
Students who have participated in the Student Showcase or received Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities (URCO) grants are good candidates to apply for the NCUR. Last year, 10 students from Utah State University went to the NCUR, but Kinkead said she hopes the university will have more representation this year.
“We’ve set aside funds to support [the selected students] travel and fees,” Kinkead said.
