Unique V-Day dates and gifts

Hearts, love, dating, flowers, kisses and candy. Most people have ideas about what they’d like on Valentine’s Day and what their perfect date would include.

Curtis Jay Allen, a senior majoring in landscape architecture and vocal performance, called Valentine’s Day “Singles Awareness Day.’ He said it’s the one day of the year that everybody rubs it in if people don’t have a date. This year he got a date.

David Marchant, a senior majoring in electrical engineering, said he is excited because this year he finally has a girlfriend. “It’s going to be fun.”

“I think Valentine’s Day is the best day of the whole year,” Marchant said. “I’ve always thought that since I was a little kid.”

Lindsey Larson, a USU graduate, said Valentine’s Day is a good time for people to remember how much they love each other. Larson is a first-year second grade teacher.

Ashlee Lewis, who works at the hospital in Logan, said she thinks it’s a good holiday to remind people to think of others and their loved ones.

From outdoor activities to lavish dinners, these guys and girls are very unique in how they want to spend Valentine’s Day.

Lewis said she thinks a dream date would be to go snowshoeing up in the canyon and then go home and play a game while listening to Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

Larson said her dream Valentine’s Day date would not include “the usuals” like flowers, chocolates and a movie. She said she’d like it if her date would take her to do the little things that he knew she really liked. “Simply, if the guy figured me out.”

She would like to do things that matched both her and her date, like going up to the canyon or playing fun games, Larson said.

Marchant is not sure what this year’s plans are but knows his idea of a great Valentine’s Day date would include fondue or going sledding down Old Main Hill.

Some students have their Valentine’s evening fully planned-out. Allen said, “I’m going to make a certain young lady feel like she’s the queen of the world for a day.”

His plans include him cooking a nice meal and making a heart-shaped double-tiered dessert topped with the words “Be mine.” He is also getting her a bouquet of her favorite flowers and then taking her to see “The Pirates of Penzance.”

Some people think Valentine’s Day should not be a big deal.

“You don’t have to do anything huge on Valentine’s Day,” Larson said. “You just have to have a good time and be yourself. There shouldn’t be a pressure to be big.”

Lewis said, “I think just spending quality time together is the big part of it.”
