USU adds Juco QB
Utah State head football coach Gary Andersen announced Monday that junior college transfer Jeffrey Fischer has signed with the Aggies.
Fischer is a 6-0, 195 pound quarterback, coming to USU from Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif. He will have two years of eligibility for the Aggies, enrolling in school in May, and will go through summer workouts with USU.
“We want to get the best players that we can in here and signing Jeff solidifies our depth and will create competition at quarterback,” Andersen said. “Diondre Borel is our starter as of now, but Jeff will come in here and battle for a spot at the top of the depth chart. He brings veteran experience along with a winning mentality. He has two years of playing and starting experience.”
Fischer is a native of Long Beach, Calif., where he attended Lakewood HS, the same hometown and high school as USU senior defensive end Darby Golden.
At Cerritos last season, Fischer was 180-of-282 (63.8 percent) for 2,063 yards with 23 touchdowns and four interceptions, leading the Falcons to a 7-4 record, and earning second-team all-National Division Central Conference accolades. He averaged 187.5 ypg with a QB efficiency rating of 149.36, and he also had 71 yards rushing with two TD’s.
“He is very talented and well deserving of all of his honors. His touchdown to interception ratio of 23 to four is off the charts,” Andersen said. “We’re excited to sign a player of his caliber and have him join our team this summer and prepare for fall camp.”
Last season, Fischer led fifth-ranked Cerritos against fourth-ranked El Camino, which featured fellow USU signees Reuben Willis and Sean Enesi on defense. Willis, Enesi and El Camino came away with a 35-32 win, as Fischer was 18-of-29 for 218 yards with one TD, while rushing for another score. As a back-up in 2007, Fischer threw for 212 yards on 18-of-31 (58.1 percent) with three TD’s and two INT’s, as well as rushing for 19 yards, seeing action in five games.
At Lakewood HS, Fischer was a National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete as a senior. He was also selected to the Press Telegram Dream Team and was named the Moore League Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for over 2,000 yards and 20 TD’s his senior season. As a junior, he earned all-league honors after throwing for 1,700 yards with 14 TD’s. Fischer was a four-year letterwinner in football and a three-year letterwinner in baseball, helping Lakewood’s baseball team to the CIF Division I championship his senior season.
With Fischer, the Aggies now have six quarterbacks on the depth chart, including two juniors in Fischer and incumbent starter Diondre Borel. Joining the juniors will be redshirt-freshmen Exavier Johnson and Robert Fuller, as well as freshman walk-on Adam Eastman, in addition to high school signee Kane Wilson.
