USU Football Preview: Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Utah State Football is looking for their third win in a row against the Wyoming Cowboys tonight.

Last season, Wyoming’s biggest victory game came against the Aggies where they won 44-17 at Maverik Stadium. Former Cowboy, now Aggie, quarterback Levi Williams had one of his best games of the season for the Cowboys. He was 12-15 with 242 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. The Cowboys rushed for 362 yards on the Aggies in the dominating win.

As mentioned, they lost a quarterback to USU, but the Pokes also lost their other quarterback from their dual-QB system. Sean Chambers, who got benched after a loss to New Mexico, threw for 1,125 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions. Williams had 990 yards with nine touchdowns and five picks while leading the team to three of their wins.

Despite losing both QBs, Wyoming gained a familiar face this year. Former Aggie quarterback Andrew Peasley has started every game for Wyoming this season. Peasley has passed for 1,005 yards throwing nine touchdowns and just three interceptions. He has been most effective when running the ball, which Aggie fans are familiar with. He has 234 rushing yards on 43 carries.

“He’s done exactly what I expected. He hurts people with his feet. He has the power to throw the ball anywhere on the field,” head coach Blake Anderson said. “We have to try and make him really uncomfortable.”

The Cowboys also feature running back Titus Swen who led Wyoming last season with 785 yards on 132 attempts and seven touchdowns. This year, Swen has rushed for over 500 yards on 115 attempts with four rushing touchdowns.

The big question mark before tonight’s game is which QB will start for Utah State. USU’s QB1 Cooper Legas was listed as day-to-day after suffering a concussion last week at Colorado State. Former Cowboy Levi Williams was also banged up against the Rams. He is dealing with an ankle injury he sustained while taking a hit after a botched snap and was also listed as day-to-day during Monday’s press conference. Last week’s hero, true freshman QB Bishop Davenport is also a possibility after he led the Aggies to victory over CSU with 10-straight points on back-to-back drives in the third quarter.

Just before kickoff, it was revealed that Davenport would get the start.

Davenport, who started the season at No. 4 on the depth chart, received no live reps since fall camp in August.

“It is safe to say that he will get plenty of reps this week,” Anderson said in the weekly presser. “With Levi and Coop being beat up and both of them being day-to-day, we will get him reps and get him ready. You could clearly see the moment was not too big for him.”

While the interpretation from Coach Anderson makes it seem like we will see Bishop lead the charge tonight, the entire quarterback room from Logan Bonner, who is out for the year with a foot injury, to Legas, Williams, Garrett Larson and Chase Tuatagaloa are all at War Memorial Stadium tonight in addition to Davenport, according to social media posts from some of the quarterbacks.

Utah State will look to get revenge against the Cowboys when they visit War Memorial Stadium at 7:45 on Aggie Radio 92.3 FM or FS2.
