USU gymnastics end with a season-high score and a loss against SUU

The Dee Glen Spectrum was filled with fans as Utah State gymnastics faced off against Southern Utah University on Friday, Feb. 2. USU finished a close second in the meet. With a score of 196.275, they trailed just behind SUU who placed first with a score of 196.8.

The score marks the team’s season high. It’s head coach Kristin White’s best score in her second year at Utah State and the ninth-best home score in school history. White said although they didn’t win, the energy of the team and the crowd was only spurring the gymnasts on.

“We had two goals tonight. One was to win the competition the other was to get 196,” White said. “We fell a little short on the win but I couldn’t be more happy for our team and the score. “And what an incredible environment for us to be in. It’s been a fantastic evening.”

Lexi Aragon scored a career-high on the balance beam with 9.925. She said no matter what the score was, the team put their best foot forward.

“It felt really good for me to hit my career-high and it’s going really good,” Aragon said. “Tonight wasn’t perfect, but there was a lot of fight in every routine and we came out with a really good score. That was our objective tonight.”

White said she was impressed with Aragon’s performance.

To be able to put up that performance when we needed it the most was amazing, and I’m so proud of her,” she said. “She worked incredibly hard to get in that anchor spot and we’re just really excited for her.”

It was the third matchup between the two schools this season. The Aggies ended with 48.95 on vault, 49.125 on bars, 49.025 on beam and 49.175 on floor.

Next week the team will be traveling for a quad meet hosted by the University of Oklahoma, against Brigham Young University and Texas Woman’s University.
