USU has highlight day at Track and Field meet

PROVO, Utah – Utah State men’s and women’s track and field teams each tabbed six event titles at the BYU Invitational Tri-Meet on Friday. Aggies had a total of 12 first-places and 18 new personal records were set at BYU’s Robison Track in Provo.

Collecting first-place finishes for the men was freshman Bryce Hall (shot put), sophomore Clint Silcock (high jump), junior Dylan Nielson (110h), junior Dusty Ott (javelin), senior Blake Hadfield (long jump) and senior Nick Karren (400h)

The first place finishes on the women’s side included freshman Spela Hus (shot put), junior Ashlee Cannon (100h), senior Tara Picket (high jump) senior Krista Larson (hammer) and both the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.

“I’m extremely pleased with performances today. Our athletes are coming together at just the right time in final preparations for the conference meet,” veteran USU head coach Gregg Gensel said. “We added a few more qualifying marks to the NCAA regional qualifying list. We’re taking the right steps and peaking at just the right time for the conference meet.”

Friday was USU’s final action before the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 13-16, hosted by USU at Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.

Hall captured the title in the shot put with a new PR of 56-09.00 (17.30m). Hall’s distance is an NCAA regional qualifying mark and is second in the Western Athletic Conference. Hall took third in the discus 163-04.25 (49.79m) setting a second PR in the meet. Hall tabbed another third-place in the hammer throw at 167-06.25 (51.06).

Karren tabbed first-place in the 400m hurdles with a career-best and NCAA regional qualifying time of 50.73. Karren’s time is the fourth-fastest in Utah State school history, as well as in contention for a United States Track & Field open championships qualifying time.

Ott won the men’s javelin with a new PR of 210-09.50 (64.25m), improving his previous PR by almost 30 feet. Ott’s mark is a new seventh-best in USU history. Ott’s mark is an NCAA regional qualifying mark and is second best in the WAC.

Silcock took first in the men’s high jump clearing 6-11.75 (2.10m) which is a new PR.

Nielson won the 110m hurdles clocking in at 14.39. Sophomore Blake Bolen also had a new PR in the event finishing in 14.79 tabbing fourth-place.

Hadfield took first-place in the long jump at 23-00.50 (7.02m). Senior John Strang took third in the event with a new season-best at 22-07.75 (6.90m) Junior Casey Parker additionally set a new PR in the long jump at 21-03.50 (6.49m) in ninth-place. Hadfield also took second in the triple jump with a new season best of 48-02.25 (14.69m).

Tabbing another first-place title was freshman Spela Hus in the shot put with a distance of 47-02.25 (14.38m). Junior Cortnie Broads set a new PR n the event at 38-09.50 (11.80m).

Junior Ashlee Cannon had a new season-best in the 100m hurdles clocking in at 14.06. Sophomore Heidi Hopkins also had a new season-best in the event at 14.62 placing her fifth in the event.

Senior Tara Pickett tied her PR in the high jump clearing 5-07.00 (1.70m) and taking first-place.

Senior Krista Larson took first-place in the hammer with a distance of 190-07.75 (58.11m). Freshman Spela Hus set a new PR in the event at 142-00.25 (43.29m) tabbing sixth-place and junior Brooke McNaughton took seventh with 139-08.00 (42.57m)

Utah State’s 4×100 relay team took first-place with a season-best time of 46.06, which is also a new fourth-fastest in Utah State school history. Utah State’s 4×400 relay team also took first place clocking in at 3:45.39.

Also doing well for the men was senior Brandon Waller set a new PR in the 400m clocking in at 48.68 in fourth-place. Sophomore Dexter Summers also had a new PR clocking in at 52.25 in seventh-place.

Senior Blake Bolen set a new PR in the 100m clocking in at 11.03 in third-place, while freshman Jon Goble (11.08) finished fourth in his first attempt at the event.

In the 800m junior Heath Wing set a new PR clocking in at 1:55.60 in fourth-place and in fifth-place was sophomore Nick Bolinder at 1:56.64 in his first attempt at the event this season. Sophomore Todd Griffith also attempted the 800m for the first time this season and finished in seventh-place at 1:57.70.

Senior Ben Kessen had a new season-best time in the 1,500m clocking in at 3:56.29 in fourth-place. He was followed by freshman Daniel Howell in fifth-place at 4:08.06.

Junior Lukasz Wicha set a new PR in the 200m clocking in at 22.50 in fifth-place.

Freshman John Johnson tied his current PR in the pole vault clearing 15-07.00 (4.75m) landing him in fifth-place/
Other women doing well for the Aggies included junior Elaine Connolly set a new PR in the 400m clocking in at 55.25 in second-place and following close behind was sophomore Katelyn Jensen at 56.86 in third-place.

Sophomore Maria Halton tabbed second in the 200m with a new PR of 24.52. Cannon tied her current PR in the event taking fifth at 25.09,

Junior Alexis Meyer set a new PR in the 800m clocking in at 2:24.02.

Also setting a new PR was freshman Julia Stewart in the triple jump at 35-10.25 (10.93m).

In the women’s discus junior Shannon Prince tabbed second-place with a distance of 151-02.50 (46.09m) while sophomore Brooke McNaughton tabbed sixth-place with a new PR of 128-00.25 (39.02m).

Freshman Ruth Hilton took second in the 3,000sc at 11:00.47.

Senior Kaylene Gastaldi had a new season-best in the 100m finishing in sixth-place at 12.50. Gastaldi also had a new season-best in the pole vault clearing 12-01.75 (3.70m).

Junior Erin Stratton was the first Aggie across the line in the 1,500m clocking in at 4:43.06, tabbing fourth-place.
