USU homecoming powderpuff tournament won by Blitz Babes

The Utah State University Homecoming Powder Puff Game was hosted at the Maverik Stadium on Oct. 14 from 3-10 p.m. The HURD student section helped host the traditional event, with help from USU Campus Recreation.

The momentum could be felt in the air for both teams before the finale started, according to HURD Committee member Jaylan Porras.

“I think it’s really exciting,” Porras said. “It’s a great way for so many girls to come together and unite towards something really, really fun.”

Committee members Kaiya Burr, Bailey Mason and Lily Wheeler spoke about how excited they were to be watching the games.

“It’s been really fun watching the game, cheering and supporting them,” Mason said.

Burr compared the sport to men’s football.

“Powder Puff is just more fun to watch than men’s football is in some aspects,” Burr said. “There’s a lot more sass and a lot more support for both teams.”

According to Wheeler, the players showcase Aggie spirit.

“You got to watch these girls who have put their heart and soul into this game,” Wheeler said. “You know that’s what being an Aggie is all about.”

The winner of this year’s games was a team called Blitz Babes.

“I think something that was really fun and special about our team is we just kept those positive vibes and good energy,” said Josie Packer, member of the winning team and USUSA student events executive director.

She stated they were a little down in the semi-final, but supporting each other and maintaining positivity helped them get into the championship game.

This year’s games hosted 11 teams, with teams KickAgg and Blitz Babes making it to the finale.

Ellie Grayson, player on KickAgg, expressed her excitement about going into the championship game.

“It’s been so fun,” Grayson said. “It’s like all day, everyone’s tired, but it’s been a blast.”

Ali Wilcox and Emma Bitner, Blitz Babes players, said they did it for their teammate, who got out in one of their first games.

“We really did this for her,” Bitner said.

Bitner and Wilcox have played Powder Puff in past years.

“What makes Powder Puff is the team you play with,” Wilcox said.

According to Bitner and Wilcox, one of the mentors and coaches for Blitz Babes Noa Aguayo has been their cheerleader.

“Honestly, I didn’t do too much,” Aguayo said. “This team last year actually lost the championship, so it’s been in the back of their minds for a long time. I did try to give them Xs and Os on kind of what to help and how we can beat these teams, but for the most part, they’re doing most of it.”

Aguayo said the team has lots of good chemistry, something one can feel from watching them play together, which ultimately led them to win this year’s championship game.

The winning team received a trophy along with a Minky Couture blanket and an Aggie Blue shirt with the faces of previous players on the front.
