Kicking off the 2012-13 campaign, the Utah State men’s basketball team won a 76-44 tuneup against Grand Canyon in exhibition play Friday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

“We played hard, that was the most positive thing,” USU head coach Stew Morrill said. “I was pleased by how hard we played defensively. We played a lot of different people. I was pleased to get everybody some time.”

The Aggies raced to a 6-0 lead and held Grand Canyon scoreless for the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. Junior guard Preston Medlin finished with 16 points in 23 minutes of play, while junior Jarred Shaw added 15 and pulled down eight rebounds in his Spectrum debut.

The Aggies shot 92 percent from the free throw line after going 23-of-25 and finished 44.4 percent from the field.

Utah State hosts Simon Fraser on Nov. 3 in its second of two exhibition games at 7 p.m.
