USU Museum of Anthropology Celebrates Community Service

 Community service will be celebrated at the next event at Utah State University’s Museum of Anthropology and its “Saturdays at the Museum” series. The July 28 activity includes a guest speaker, Sara Jordan, an instructor in USU’s Department of English who studies folklore and gender.
           
Jordan will present “Margaret Mead’s Citizens: an Oral History of the Founding of the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah” at 1 p.m. at the museum. The presentation will examine the process whereby social change is initiated at the local level and explore the impact of activism on individual lives, as well as a community, over time.
           
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. museum guests can meet representatives from several organizations in Cache Valley, including the Cache Valley Humane Society and the Cache Valley Volunteer Center.  The museum will also collect canned goods for the Cache Community Food Pantry throughout the day.
           
“According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, community service improves lives, strengthens communities and fosters civic engagement,” said Britt McNamara, a Saturdays program planner. “This Saturday activity is a way for the Museum of Anthropology to recognize the tireless work of service organizations in our community.”
           
In addition to the Saturdays at the Museum activity series, community members and USU students alike can visit the museum during its standard operating hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
           
Funding for the Saturday events is provided by a grant from the United States Institute of Museum and Library Services. More information about the IMLS is available online (www.imls.gov).
           
The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252. Admission is free. For Saturday activities, free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.
