USU names former assistant as head volleyball coach
Former USU assistant coach Grayson DuBose has been named the new women’s volleyball coach at Utah State University, it was announced Monday.
DuBose has been hired to replace former coach Burt Fuller who resigned in February after coaching at USU for five years.
“Burt just felt like he wanted a new challenge,” Senior Associate Athletic Director Ken Peterson said. “He was successful [at Utah State]. He just felt like it was time for a change.”
Peterson said there were about 15 people applying for the job and DuBose was one of three people interviewed. They decided on DuBose because they felt he fit in better at Utah State, he said.
“There’s a lot more to hiring someone than if they can win or lose,” Peterson said. “It’s a multi-faceted thing to be a head coach and it’s more than just showing up on the court. I thought Grayson fit that better than the others.
“I think he has the personality and the qualifications – all the things you need to do to be a good head coach,” he said.
Everywhere DuBose has been as a coach, Peterson said he has always been a winner. Utah State won the Eastern Division of the Big West Conference in 1999 while DuBose was a member of the coaching staff and the team advanced to its first-ever NCAA tournament in 2000. While as an assistant coach for BYU’s men’s volleyball team, DuBose has helped lead the team to an 86-25 record and a national championship.
DuBose said he decided to return to USU for two reasons. The first was the fact that he coached here before and the second was the fact that his wife is from Cache Valley.
“I’ve had success in other places,” DuBose said of the strengths he is bringing to the team. “I know how to train kids in how to play volleyball.”
DuBose said he didn’t have any goals for the team yet because he wanted to have a chance to get to know them and for the team to get to know his systems.
