USU online book exchange is no longer safe!
Dear Editor,
The USU online book exchange is no longer safe. Last week I received an email from what I thought was another student, asking to buy one of my books off of the online book exchange. They told me they wanted my address and telephone number so that they could mail me a money order and then a friend would come pick up the book from me, since they were not from Logan. So far it still sounded normal to me. It wasn’t until this morning that I received an email saying that their husband had died and the person who sent the money order to me sent it for $2320.00 instead of the agreed price of $20.00. The email then instructed me to email them back when I received the money order and go and cash it at my bank. They told me I could keep $320 and to send the rest of the cash Internationally through Western Union. Since I worked at a bank last summer, I knew that this was a serious scam that has been going around. I am writing you in hopes to get the word out to other students. They need to be careful on the USU online book exchange because if they were to follow those instructions, eventually the cashiers check or money order would bounce and they would be out all that money. I plan to take the check I receive in the mail along with the emails I received to fraud department of the bank that I worked at. The warning signs of this fraud include bad english in the emails, signed by someone with an American name. Mine was signed by a Helen David. I hope the sharing of my story will help prevent others from making an extremely costly mistake. Thank you
