USU PROFESSOR NAMED TO PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL EDITORSHIP

Dr. Ray Reutzel, director of the Emma Eccles Jones Center for Early Childhood Education at Utah State University was recently named editor of the international childhood literacy journal, The Reading Teacher. The journal is associated with the International Reading Association (IRA) and representatives from the IRA will be at USU on May 13 at 3 p.m. to meet with the Provost and Dean.

This editorship provides the opportunity to shape discussion about literacy instruction in the United States and around the world. The IRA is a community of professionals with 90,000 members in 99 countries, dedicated to promoting higher achievement levels in literacy, reading, and communication by continually advancing the quality of instruction worldwide. The Reading Teacher is published 9 times a year and has a readership of 75,000 persons and 15,000 institutional subscribers world-wide per month.

Dr. Reutzel received his bachelor‚s degree in elementary education from the University of Wyoming. While teaching kindergarten, third and sixth grades over the next four years, he completed his master‚s degree in reading and elementary education at Utah State University. He then earned his doctorate in education from the University of Wyoming, where he focused on reading, language arts and elementary education.

He has served as a professor at three universities, including Brigham Young University, where he chaired the elementary education department and was associate dean for teacher education. He has also been both president and vice president of the Utah Council of the International Reading Association and served as provost of Southern Utah University prior to taking the position at Utah State.
