PROFESSOR RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

M. Isela Chiu, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese in the Department of Languages and Philosophy at Utah State University, is one of only 13 people nationwide to receive Outstanding Advising Certificates of Merit in the Faculty Academic Advising category as part of the 2002 National Academic Advising Association‚s (NACADA) national awards program. The announcement was made in a NACADA news release.

The Faculty Academic Advising category includes those whose primary responsibility is teaching, and who spend a portion of their time providing academic advising services to students, the news release continued.

Each year since 1983, NACADA, in cooperation with ACT, Inc., has honored individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising, the news release stated. The goal of NACADA is to promote quality advising and professional development of its membership, enhancing the educational development of students.

NACADA‚s 6,500 members include faculty, professional advisors, administrators, counselors and others in academic and student affairs, concerned with the intellectual, personal and vocational needs of students. In addition, NACADA represents academic advisors and serves

as an advocate for academic advising.

Chiu will be honored and presented this award in Salt Lake City during the annual NACADA national conference in October.

She was recognized last year at Utah State as Advisor of the Year for the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. She was then named the university‚s Advisor of the Year in the annual Robins Awards.
