USU softball squad ends season with a loss

Utah State ended its season with a 7-0 loss to Cal Poly in Big West softball action here Saturday. Saturday’s game was the final outing for USU’s three seniors: Amanda Carlson, Casey Smith and Haven Vance.

“This isn’t how you want to send your seniors off,” said head coach Debbie Bilbao. “I am so proud of the leadership our seniors showed throughout the season. They are going to be greatly missed.”

With the loss, the Aggies end their 2004 campaign with a 10-41 overall record and a 6-15 Big West mark, while the Mustangs finish up at 22-28 and 10-11.

Neither team mustered much offense through the first three innings as they combined for just four hits.

With the score knotted at zero, Cal Poly came to bat in the top of the fourth inning. Kristi Alvers got things going with a leadoff single. In the Mustangs’ next at bat, Jeana Gevas provided all the offense Cal Poly would need with a towering home run to straightaway center field.

Cal Poly added one more run in the fourth, two in the fifth and padded its lead in the seventh inning with two additional runs.

Emily Hively pitched a complete game four hitter for the Mustangs and improved to 12-14 on the year. Leslie Higley went the distance for the Aggies giving up seven runs, only two of which were earned, as USU committed four errors behind her.

The Aggies’ four hits came off the bats of Haven Vance, Casey Smith, Candice Hatch, and Jessica Garnett.
