USU splits during Spring Break
The Utah State Aggies (2-4, 0-0) club baseball team went into action during Spring Break, participating in the annual Swing into Spring tournament held in Mesquite, Nev. The team played a total of four games and came out of the tournament with a 2-2 record.
In the first game the Aggies went up against Loyola Marymount University and came out with the victory, 11-8. Casey Jorgensen picked up the win, throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts while giving up five unearned runs. Third baseman Alex Davis came up big on the offensive end going 2-3 with three RBIs. The Aggies had a huge second inning as they torched the Loyola Marymount’s pitcher and scored eight runs in the frame.
In the second game of the tournament the Aggies went up against the No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks and got pummeled in every aspect, as Oregon’s pitcher no-hitted the Aggies, and USU lost 9-0. Zack Gunn went the complete game for the Aggies allowing seven hits and six earned runs. The Aggies defense also had two errors that proved costly down the stretch.
In the third game, the Aggies again faced Loyola Marymount, this time winning much more easily, 11-2. Ryan Doyle picked up the win for the Aggies, allowing only two hits while striking out five. Brad Singer went 1-3 with three RBIs and Kevin Hall went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs. Doyle also got in the RBI column with a sacrifice fly.
In the fourth and final game, the Aggies went up against UC-Santa Barbara, losing in a nail-biter, 2-1. Jesse Kunz was credited for the loss for the Aggies, but came up with eight strikeouts and only walked one. Broc Neagle got the only RBI for the Aggies as he hit a double in the top of the fourth inning, knocking in Brad Singer for the lone run.
The coaching staff for the Aggies came out of the tournament pleased with a lot of things they saw but felt like there was a good amount of stuff to be worked on. Utah State now opens up league play Friday as they host the defending league champion Weber State Wildcats (6-11, 3-0) at 4 p.m. and finish up Saturday with a double-header starting at 1 p.m. All home games for the Aggies are played at Providence Field.
