USU student hurt in hit-and-run accident

A USU student sustained injuries in a hit-and-run accident Wednesday night while crossing the street at 1100 E. 700 North, near Bullen Hall.

USU Police Lt. James Nye said 18-year-old Sara Sharp was taken to Logan Regional Hospital with a broken femur, bruising on the left side of her body and internal bruising after being hit by what witnesses have identified as a green or blue 1990s model Chevy or Dodge pickup.

Nye said Sharp was crossing the street northbound at approximately 9:45 p.m. when she saw a vehicle traveling east. Nye said she said she thought she had time to cross the street but was struck by the pickup. After hitting Sharp, he said the vehicle continued to drive and turned north on 1200 East.

Police are investigating and ask anyone who has information about the incident to speak with police. He said they are hopeful the individual involved will come forward.

Based on evidence gathered at the scene, police said the front grill and possibly the signal-light assembly were damaged. The speed limit in the area is 25 miles per hour, but Nye said police couldn’t determine how fast the vehicle was traveling because no skid marks were made. Nye said it is possible the driver didn’t see Sharp at all or that the individual was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

After speaking with Sharp Thursday, Nye said she is doing well considering the circumstances.

“She had pretty good spirits,” he said, “as good as can be with a broken femur.”
