USU Tennis competes in regional championship

Sophomore Curren Wearmouth took home the only USU victory at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., on Wednesday.

Wearmouth defeated Dylan Hansel of Weber State 6-0, 6-2, to advance in the main draw. Coming up short were junior Fredrik Peterson (6-2, 6-2), Brandon Nielsen (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) and Andrew Whiting (6-1, 6-4). Also not moving on to the second round are sophomores Matt Sweet (6-3, 6-4), Tanner Dance (6-0, 6-0), and Matt Thatcher (6-4, 6-0) as well as freshman Zeno Kastelic (6-1, 6-0).

All of the Aggies who lost moved into the consolation bracket. Dance, Nielsen and Sweet all had first-round byes in the bracket, while Thatcher (6-2, 6-4), Peterson (6-3, 6-4), Kastelic (6-3, 6-2) and Whiting (7-6, 6-7, 6-4) were all defeated.

In the first round of doubles matches, Sweet and Dance defeated Steven Young and Ali Rizvi of Air Force 8-6. Nielsen and Peterson won their match against Javier Martin-Morillas and Markus Schleuter of Montana 8-2. Aggie duos Thatcher and Whiting (8-5), and Kastelic and Wearmouth (8-2) each lost their doubles matches. Thatcher and Whiting also lost their consolation match 8-0.

On Thursday, the second day of the tournament, Wearmouth was defeated by Ace Matias of UNLV 6-1, 6-2. After the loss, he defeated Phillip Hinojosa of Nevada 6-2, 6-1, in the consolation bracket.

Sweet won his second round match in the consolation bracket due to his opponent retiring, while Nielsen and Dance were both defeated.

In round two of the doubles consolation bracket, Nielsen and Peterson defeated a team from UNLV 8-5, while Dance and Sweet lost to a team also from UNLV 8-2.

Play continues for the Aggie men in singles and doubles matches throughout the weekend.
