USU tops Boise in tight conference tilt
UTAH STATE Aggies vs. BOISE STATE BroncosUSU 82 BS 64
LOGAN, Utah — Shooting guard Tony Brown scored 17 points and led a parade of four Utah State Aggies who scored in double figures as USU topped Boise State 82-64 Saturday night. Also leading USU to a Big West conference win were Bernard Rock, 16, Dimitri Jorssen, 15, and Shawn Daniels, 12. The win gives the Aggies (16-2, 5-0) their 24th consecutive win against Big West opponents and keeps their home winning streak alive at 18. USU’s 16-2 start on the season ties them with the 1970-71 Aggies as the second-best start in school history. Boise State (10-9, 2-4) was led in scoring by Abe Jackson, 21, and Delvin Armstrong, 20. BSU senior forward Kejuan Wood, second-highest scorer on the season for the Broncos (12.6 ppg), was unable to play due to a sprained ankle suffered Thursday night in a 76-71 loss to UC-Irvine. Boise State only trailed 46-44 midway through the second half when USU went on a 11-2 run. Two three-point shots and a steal by Rock, the steal leading to an additional three-pointer by Brown, turned the tide to the Aggies. All of Rock’s points came in the second half. The Bronco effort was additionally hampered when Richard Morgan, who scored 11 points in the first half, fouled out with nearly 10 minutes remaining in the game. A tight, tense, well-played contest before 9,607 louder-than-usual Aggie fans, the game was marked by five ties, including one in the second half. The visiting Broncos led much of the first half, when they shot 6-13 from beyond the three-point arc. The Broncos had two three-point shots blocked in the final two minutes and USU dropped four of five free throws and a three-pointer in during the game’s final two minutes as BSU’s desparation defense could not get any turnovers.
