USU track edges out CSU at Weber meet

OGDEN, Utah – USU junior Brett Guymon led the Aggie men to a first place finish at the Weber State Meet with the score of 120 with his first place finish in the 400m hurdles.

Guymon’s run broke the William H. Child Track Stadium record with a mark of 51.03 Saturday. The old mark was 51.05 and was set by Weber State University’s Dave Chowen in 1988. Guymon also placed second in the 110m hurdles with a mark of 14.48. The women placed third with a score of 103.

Other Aggie men to place in the top-three were junior Dwayne Foster with a third place finish in the 100m with a mark of 10.47, senior Brick Bergeson with a second place finish in the 800m with a mark of 1:48.19, senior Dave Hoffman with a second place finish in the high jump with a mark of 6’7.5″, senior James Parker with second place finishes in the discus throw and the shot put with marks of 178’0″ and 54’11”, and sophomore Christian Lee with a second place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 16’6 and sophomore Steve Prescott with a third place finish in the 5,000m with a mark of 14:52.83.

The USU runners took third place in the 4x100m relay with a mark of 51.03, and the 4x400m relay with a mark of 3:13.87.

On the women’s side, the first place finishers were senior Danielle Kot in the 100m with a mark of 11.66, junior Kristi Connors in the 400m with a mark of 55.29, senior Rebekah Thornley in the 1,500m with a mark of 4:32.17, the USU runners in the 4x400m with a mark of 3:43.99, and freshman Candice Workman in the Discus with a mark of 153’9″.

Other Aggie women to place in the top-three were freshman Candice Workman with a third place finish in the shot put with a mark of 45’8.5″ and sophomore Debra Barker with a second place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 11’10”.

USU’s track and field teams landed 30 student-athletes on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation academic all-conference teams last week. That total was the most in the league ahead of runner-up Washington State University’s total of 25.

The MPSF is made up of schools from the Big West, Mountain West, Pacific 10, West Coast and Western Athletic Conferences. To qualify for the teams, student-athletes must possess a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, must be at least a sophomore academically, must have completed at least one full academic year at their school and must have participated in 50 percent or more of their team’s competitions.

Other schools with at least 10 selections included University of Washington with 18, Stanford University with 15 and University of Arizona with 14. UCLA and Long Beach State University each had six selections, while Arizona State University placed four athletes on the list.
