USU’s Men’s 4x100m Relay Team Finishes 21st While Spencer Places 29th In Women’s Hammer
AUSTIN, Texas — Action concluded Saturday at the NCAA Championship West Region Preliminary Round, in Austin, Texas with Utah State in two events, as the 4×100 meter relay team finished 21st and freshman Lindsey Spencer finished 29th in the women’s hammer throw.
The three-day meet at the University of Texas’s Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium wrapped up in the final qualification for the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 9-12 at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., hosted by the University of Oregon.
The USU men’s 4x100m relay team of senior Nick Karren, junior Armahd Lewis, freshman Matt Maughan and junior Mike Pyrtle, finished 21st with a 40.60 time. It was their third-fastest time of the season, behind their school-record time of 40.05 as well as a 40.38.
“Our relay team ran their third-fastest time of the season and weren’t even close to advancing,” veteran USU head coach Gregg Gensel said. “They just ran against some really tough competition.”
Spencer was 29th in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.48m (178-09), her second-best mark of the season, behind her top distance of 56.23m (184-06).
“Lindsey had a solid day, she was within four feet of her PR (personal-record),” Gensel said.
While the relay team and Spencer didn’t advance, Utah State will have two athletes competing at Nationals, as Karren will be in the 400m hurdles and junior Clint Silcock will compete in the high jump, as both qualified during Friday’s action.
“I’m happy we got two in, but I’m not satisfied. But that’s why you run the meet: to prove yourself and try to earn a spot to the national meet,” Gensel said. “I’m excited to see how our two athletes do at Nationals. I think they’re going to do really well.”
