USU’s strong showing in Albuquerque falls short
The USU women’s basketball team took on the women’s New Mexico Lobos Wednesday evening. After righting the ship earlier in the week against Air Force, the Aggies were looking to gain some momentum going into the final stretch of the season. USU ultimately came up short, falling to the Lobos by a score of 74-56.
In the first quarter the Lobos jumped out to a 5-0 lead, only to see the Aggies respond with a 10-0 run. In a back and fourth quarter the Aggies led 21-18 going into the break. Thanks to a balanced scored attack which saw six different Aggies break into the scoring column.
In the second it was still very much a back and forth affair but between a balanced attack in the paint and a couple of threes, the Lobos went into the break up by four.
At the break, USU senior guard Rachel Brewster led all scorers with 12 points while junior forward Shannon Dufficy was busy on the glass, recording nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Jaedyn De La Ceres led the Lobos with 11 points, going 3-5 from behind the arc.
The Aggies went on a quick 9-0 run to regain the lead in the third quarter, highlighted by a three from freshman guard Steph Gorman. After that the Lobos quickly separated themselves with an 18-5 run which included four threes. The Aggies went into the fourth down five, and trying to regain their momentum.
They were unable to do so. The Lobos outscored the Aggies 19-6 in the fourth quarter and limited the Aggies offensively, allowing only two field goals.
Brewster finished with 20 points on the night, leading the game in scoring. In a game that seemed very much winnable, the Aggies were unable to overcome their poor shooting night. They finished 32% from the field and 23% from distance.
