Utah Festival Opera Season underway

The Summer Season of the Utah Festival Opera Company will soon be upon Cache Valley. Rated as one of the top 10 summer opera experiences in the United States, the season will again feature four productions:

“Marriage of Figaro”by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart–Affianced lovers Figaro and Susanna join a ruse designed to reveal the advances of their lecherous employer, Count Almaviva. Through a succession of awkward and humorous situations, pandemonium ensues in this witty yet profound tale of infatuation, betrayal, and forgiveness. Enjoy the plot twists, mistaken identities, and sparkling banter, as the ‘rules’ of entitlement are challenged. Mozart’s well-known music makes this comic tour-de-force an operatic favorite. Join us in celebrating the 250th anniversary of his birth!

“The Music Man”by Meredith Willson–When musical instrument salesman Harold Hill hopped off the train in River City, Iowa, he thought he’d be able to ply his usual tricks and manipulate the town into lining his pockets. He certainly didn’t count on getting wrapped up in the excitement of his own scheme or falling in love with Marion the Librarian. With familiar favorites such as Till There Was You and Seventy-Six Trombones, The Music Man is as American as apple pie and the 4th of July and stands unquestionably as one of the most beloved shows of all time.

La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini –The scene is Paris in the 1830s, and an inseparable quartet of friends struggle to forget their sorrows and focus on creating art. Times are often hard, especially for adoring young lovers Rudolfo and Mimi–but in the midst of their impoverished circumstances, they still manage to find truth, beauty, freedom, and la vie boheme. Puccini’s most memorable operatic work reminds us to live for the moment, to love freely, and to grab hold of every opportunity for happiness.

Man of La Mancha –by Mitch Leigh & Joe Darion?Having survived five years of imprisonment, Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes was inspired to create an enduring tale about nobility, chivalry, and idealism–characteristics all embodied within Don Quixote, the Man of La Mancha. With his good friend Sancho Panza by his side, they begin a quest to battle all evil and right all wrongs. Michael Ballam returns to the stage to portray this dreamer, who exemplifies how the imagination can transform life’s circumstances and lead us…not to see life as it is, but as it ought to be.
