Utah guard Rylan Jones Transferring to USU
First reported by Jake Hatch of the Zone Sports Network on Friday morning and confirmed by Statesman Sports, Utah guard Rylan Jones will transfer to Utah State.
The 6’0 178 pound junior is an elite passer that will compete for a starting spot for the Aggies next season.
With new Utah coach Craig Smith loading his backcourt with former Aggie guards Marco Anthony and Rollie Worster, UNLV guard David Jenkins Jr., and Cincinnati’s Gabe Madsen, it’s no surprise that Jones – who spent much of his adolescents in Logan – decided to make the move to USU.
Jones had a successful freshman season as a Ute, averaging 9.6 points and 4.5 assists while starting in all 28 games. He had a career-high 25 points in a victory against BYU.
But hampered by a shoulder injury last season, Jones averaged 4.4 points and 4.0 assists in 17 games played.
In high school, Jones played for Logan High as a freshman before transferring to Olympus High in Salt Lake City. His junior season with the Titans, he averaged 18.3 points, 9.9 assists, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game, leading his team to an undefeated season and state championship while earning himself Utah Gatorade player of the year.
The USU backcourt is coming together for the 2021-22 season, as Jones is the third guard Odom and staff have picked up in recent days. In April, they nabbed first-team All-American East guard RJ Etyle Rock from UMBC and then signed Bahraini guard Muzamil Ameer Hamoda out of high school.
