BREAKING: Koby McEwen to transfer

After spending his first two collegiate seasons in Utah State’s starting line-up, Sophomore guard Koby McEwen announced his exit from Utah State University on Friday afternoon on his Twitter.

“I would like to thank Utah State University,” he wrote, “my teammates, the outgoing coaching staff and Aggie nation for the past two years.”

“I have received my official release and will be transferring to pursue athletic and academic opportunities at another institution.

McEwen, who attended the Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, came to the Aggies with potential to be the star on a Jalen Moore-less Aggie team. He would win the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, and was named to the third-team all-Mountain West last year.

McEwen averaged more than 15 points per game in his time at USU, adding five rebounds and three assists as well. This included 11 games where he scored 20 points, and two of those being more than 30 points.

Per NCAA rules, he will have to sit out one year before he can play for the school: in his tweet, he did not say where he intends to play.

The resignation comes just days after Utah State hired Craig Smith, formerly of South Dakota, as head coach. This leaves an air of concern as the Aggies will now have to play under a new coach, a new system, without their star player.
