UTAH STATE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT HONORS OUTSTANDING STUDENTS AND FACULTY

The department of chemistry in Utah State University‚s College of Science honored its top students and faculty at an awards program and reception in April at the Haight Alumni Center on the Utah State campus.

Students receiving honors at the event were Cache Valley natives Chelsey Ashcroft and Ryan Campbell, who both received the Thomas M. Farley Freshman Chemistry Award. The two received the “Handbook of Chemistry and Physics% and a cash award for having the best scholastic record in the principles of chemistry course.

Sophomore Ashley Ellsworth, junior Ricky Gardner and senior Greg A. Marshall, all from Cache Valley, were each granted the Garth L. Lee Undergraduate Scholarship Award. The students demonstrated an outstanding command of chemical science and were given a textbook award in honor of Garth L. Lee, former professor of chemistry at Utah State.

The Maeser-Bauer Undergraduate Scholarship Award, established in memory of Sherwin Maseer and Norman Bauer, was given to Loren L. Hansen, also of Cache Valley. The award is presented to an outstanding junior or senior chemistry major for high scholastic achievement.

John L. Blau received the American Institute of Chemists Foundation Undergraduate Award for his leadership, ability, character and scholastic achievement, according to the awards program. Blau received a plaque and a one-year, student-associate membership in the American Institute of Chemists Foundation. He is from Cache Valley.

To further promote undergraduate research in the chemistry department, a summer research award was given to Cache Valley native Kathleen M. Job. Job received funds to conduct research this summer.

Distinguished alumni awards went to Logan native Darrell N. Ward, acknowledged throughout the world as a leader in the field of endocrinology, and Ogden native Robert W. Parry, an inorganic chemist.
