Utah State Finishes Fourth At 2009 WAC Golf Championships
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior Toph Peterson shot a three-under par 69 to lead Utah State to a fourth-place team finish during the final round of the 2009 Western Athletic Conference men’s golf championships held here at Rio Secco Golf Club on Wednesday. The fourth-place finish for USU is its best conference tournament finish since the 1997 Aggie team also finished fourth at the Big West Championships.
Peterson, who had five birdies and two bogeys on Wednesday to tie his collegiate low round, helped Utah State finish one stroke ahead of Nevada for fourth-place as USU shot a seven-over 295 on Wednesday and finished with a 27-over 891, while Nevada shot an eight-over 296 during its final round and finished with a 28-over 892. Both teams entered the final round tied for fourth-place with identical scores of 596.
New Mexico State held on to win the team championship as it shot a one-under 287 during its final round to finish six-over for the tournament with an 870 (282-301-287), one stroke ahead of Fresno State who shot a four-under 284 on Wednesday and finished with a seven-over 871 (287-300-284). Idaho finished third overall with a 12-over 876 (288-301-287), followed by Utah State at fourth (293-303-295) and Nevada in fifth (295-301-296). San Jose State finished in sixth-place with a 31-over 895 (292-306-297), while Louisiana Tech finished seventh with a 42-over 906 (296-317-293). Boise State was eighth as it finished with a 61-over 925 (307-317-301), and Hawai’i was ninth with an 81-over 945 (306-327-312).
New Mexico State’s Travis Reed won the individual championship with a seven-under 209 (67-73-69), while Fresno State’s Grant Doverspike finished in second-place with a four-under 212 (67-75-70), and San Jose State’s Jay Myers was third with a one-under 215 (70-74-71).
Seniors Devin Daniels (Hyde Park, Utah) and Tyler Labrum (Roosevelt, Utah) tied for ninth overall for Utah State as both players finished the tournament with four-over 220’s as Daniels carded rounds of 74, 71 and 75, while Labrum had rounds of 69, 77 and 74. Sophomore Tyson McFarland (Rexburg, Idaho) finished tied for 22nd for Utah State with an 11-over 227 (72-75-80), while Peterson (Logan, Utah) finished tied for 35th with a 19-over 235 (78-88-69). Senior Thad Truman also competed for USU and finished in 39thwith a 21-over 237 (80-80-77).
The 2009 WAC Championship concludes the spring season for Utah State.
