Utah State Has 61 Student-Athletes Receive Winter Academic All-WAC Honors
The Western Athletic Conference announced its winter all-academic teams on Tuesday and Utah State had 61 student-athletes recognized from the sports of gymnastics, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s indoor track & field to lead the league.
Of its 61 academic all-WAC selections, Utah State had 31 student-athletes from women’s indoor track honored, along with 17 from men’s indoor track, five from women’s basketball, and four from both gymnastics and men’s basketball.
Utah State’s men’s and women’s track programs led all WAC schools with its 48 combined honorees, as did men’s basketball who accounted for half of the student-athletes honored in that sport with its four honorees. Women’s basketball also faired well compared to the rest of the WAC as its five honorees were tied for the second-most in the league.
Boise State had 50 winter academic all-WAC honorees to rank second behind Utah State’s 61. Idaho was third with 34 academic all-WAC recipients, followed by Hawai’i (28), New Mexico State (27), Nevada (25), Fresno State (22), San Jose State (16) and Louisiana Tech (9).
Junior Kim Quinn, who competes in cross country, and both indoor and outdoor track, has now earned academic all-WAC honors seven times in her career, while junior cross country/track athlete Jessie Chugg earned her sixth academic all-WAC honor.
Student-athletes who are earning academic all-WAC honors for the fifth time include track athletes Camille Fehlberg, Ruth Hilton and Brian McKenna. Those student-athletes earning their fourth all-WAC honor include basketball players Alice Coddington, Matt Formisano and Tyler Newbold, gymnast Lyndsie Boone and track athletes Steven Atkinson and Daniel Howell. Three-time honorees include basketball players Stacey Howard and Brady Jardine, gymnast Haley Hogan, and track athletes Michael Budge, Marissa Floodman, Madison Jensen, John Johnson, Clint Silcock and Chalese West.
Furthermore, of the 61 USU student-athletes to earn winter academic all-WAC honors, 29 are receiving the accolade for at least the second time.
To be eligible for the winter academic team, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
