Utah State Tennis Recap

The Utah State men’s and women’s tennis teams had matches over the weekend, with the men’s team dropping their match against the University of Utah 1-6, and the women’s team winning their matches against Idaho State 6-1 and 6-1 against the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The loss dropped the men’s team record to 1-4 on the season, and the wins for the women’s team brought their record up to 3-0.

Women’s team shines

In their match against Idaho State, the women’s team was won the doubles point, with two of the three pairs winning their matches. In singles play, the Aggies were able to win all but one of their matches; Freshman Zara Ryan, freshman Renata Lombera, sophomore Annaliese County, sophomore Sidnee Lavatai, and freshman Carolina Millan all winning their matches.

Against UTEP, the Aggies won the doubles point with two of the doubles pairs winning their matches. In singles play, the Aggies won five of their six matches, with senior Lucy Octave winning  in two-straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1. Ryan won her match 6-2 and 6-1. In addition, senior Hannah Jones bested her opponent 6-2 and 6-2, Millan won both matches, 6-to-1 and 6-3. Finally, County won her match 6-1 and 6-3.

After the match, Ryan said, “it was a great win for us.” She continued, saying, “we are 3-0 now, we are doing well and have some great momentum going for us. The team did really well.

“I am really proud of the team and we did a great job.”

There is a lot of optimism on the team, and it appears that it is well-founded.

Men’s team looks to improve

In their match against the University of Utah, the men’s team did not fare as well as the women. The Aggies dropped the doubles points, getting swept in three matches. The team also dropped all but one of their matches in singles play. The lone win came from freshman Arvid Hjalte, who won in straight sets 7-5 and 6-3. 

The loss dropped the men’s record to 1-4 on the season and the team is looking for a way to improve for the remainder of the season.

Upcoming matches

The next match for the men’s team will be against the Brigham Young University Cougars on Saturday, February 22nd. The next match for the women’s team will come against the University of Utah Utes on Saturday, February 22nd as well.
