Utah State Women Finish Sixth, Men Seventh At 2004 Big West Conference Track and Field Championships

Utah State’s men’s and women’s track and field teams finished in seventh and sixth-place respectively at the 2004 Big West Conference Track and Field Championships held at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine over the weekend.

Cal State Northridge swept the meet as the men scored 157 points and the women notched 165. USU was the two-time defending men’s champions, while the Aggie women finished fifth last year.

“I am really proud of our team and we performed about as well as can be expected,” said USU head coach Gregg Gensel. “You have to give credit to the other teams because I thought they all performed really well.”

Senior Josh Sides was the only individual champion for USU as he defended his title in the shot put with a mark of 59-02.00, and also won the hammer with a toss of 194-10, defeating teammate and defending champion in senior Ryan Bruhn by one inch as he had a mark of 194-09 in the event.

USU’s men’s team had two other top-three finishes on the day as sophomore Trevor Ball placed second in the 5000-meters with a time of 14:38.58, while senior Mark Burton was third in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 57-00.25.

Utah State’s top female finisher on the day was sophomore Alana Geisler who placed second in the pole vault with a height of 11-09.75. Freshman Katie Thatcher notched a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.15, while freshman Amber Judd was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.21) and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.48).

Utah State will return to action on May 28-29 at the NCAA Regionals in Northridge, Calif.
