Van crash lawsuit settled
A lawsuit has been settled for the families of USU students who died in a USU van crash in 2005.
After 18 months of the lawsuit pending, one portion of it was finally settled over the holidays, said Brad Bearnson, Logan attorney for the families. Eight students and one instructor were killed when the 15-passenger van, returning from a field trip to Logan, blew a tire and rolled near Tremonton. Two other students sustained injuries from the crash. Seven of the families of the students joined in a lawsuit against Chrysler LLC, the makers of the van, and Cooper Tire and Rubber.
Chrysler and the plaintiffs came to an agreement on the lawsuit, Bearnson said.
“I can’t tell you any of the specifics of the settlement,” Bearnson said.
No information is being released about the continuing settlement with Cooper Tire and Rubber, he said.
“We are pursing this, and it will take its course,” Bearnson said.
USU has not been involved with the lawsuit in any way, said John DeVilbiss, USU public relations director.
