V-Day rock from the ’80s coming to Hyrum Friday

OK, not everyone has a significant other. Boo-hoo, right?

That doesn’t mean they can’t celebrate the day formerly set aside for couples (not that couples aren’t welcome at the concert).

Here’s the perfect solution: Cheesy love songs from the ’80s performed by local bands.

Strangeways Productions is sponsoring the concert Friday, at 7 p.m. at the old Scooter Theater in Hyrum, 250 W. Main. The cost is $5 at the door or $4 for those dressed ’80s style.

The show will be a competition between the six bands playing.

Whichever band can perform the best cover of “I Melt With You” by Modern English, wins. The losers get a free guitar lesson.

“Everyone knows these songs word for word, they just don’t want to admit it. It’ll be cool to see what we can whip out of the closet,” said John Tueller, a member of Strangeways Production and a member of one of the bands performing, Clovis and Felix.

Each band will play a 45-minute set. Tueller called the bands a mix of “alternative pop and power punk.”

But the bands won’t just be performing covers of ’80s bands, they’ll also play their own songs, Tueller said.

Tueller said this will hopefully be the first of many concerts to come from Strangeways.

“It’ll be good to have live music back in Logan,” Tueller said. “It seems like concerts are few and far between. There’s a lot of talented local bands; there’s something for everyone.”

Tueller also said he wants to create a place where independent bands can stop by and play after playing in Salt Lake City.

“We’ll have to see if the university will support us,” Tueller said.

Editor’s Note: In Friday’s issue, the article stated the concert would be held
