Voice Male sets concert dates in Logan
Voice Male, a six-man contemporary a cappella ensemble, will be performing their annual Christmas concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 14 and 15 in the Kent Concert Hall and will include songs from their soon-to-be-released album, “Six.”
John Huff said Voice Male began singing in the fall of 1994. The original nine members were all students at Utah State University. In the fall of 1996, the group changed to a six-man lineup that continues to perform semi-professionally while, at the same time, allowing group members time for other pursuits.
Now, two of the students are graduate students at Utah State University and the rest are scattered throughout Utah.
“Logan is still a great place to come back to,” Mike Bearden, a graduate student said. “We don’t get near the reception anywhere else we do here.”
Phil Kesler, a graduate student, said, “We’re pretty different. No one majored in music for more than a year and I don’t think any of us could do what we do without each other. We need each other.”
Their repertoire mixes popular favorites from the ’50s to the ’90s and includes pop, rock, jazz, country and barbershop music.
“[For our CD], we’ve chosen some of our favorite pop songs that we’ve sung over the past six years, like Pride and The Lion Sleeps Tonight and put them on this CD, along with some of our new favorites, like Brown Eyed Girl and A Million Ways,” said John Huff, a tenor in the group.
John Luthy, the group’s vocal percussionist, said “Six” has turned out to be one of their best efforts.
He said, “I think ‘Six’ is going to be my favorite out of all of our CDs. It has great energy.”
Kesler said, “I would have to say the coolest thing about singing in this group is that we can entertain everyone from little old ladies to young children. Children, parents and grandparents can be entertained.”
Bearden said, “My favorite part used to be the music and I do a lot of the writing and arranging and I do enjoy creating. But, it’s becoming more now. I enjoy our shows being well-rounded, with comedy and entertainment. I love coming away from a show knowing the audience got everything they came for.”
Huff said Voice Male has been producing their annual Christmas concert series since 1997. Their first Christmas concerts were held in Logan in the Morgan Theatre at USU. Since then, they’ve continued to produce annual concerts in Logan and have added sold-out shows across the Wasatch Front, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.
