Dear Andrea, I just read your article “Forty Years Later: Wayne Estes Remembered,” dated 2/25/05.I have long been facinated with the life and times of Wayne Estes. I enjoyed your well written piece and thought I might add a few items for your interest.-Wayne Estes remains the greatest basketball to ever come out of Montana. Ironically, he was not offered a scholarship at either Montana State University or University of Montana. Both coaches felt he was too overweight to play effectively. As it turned out, he lost 45 pounds during his year on the freshman squad.-Wayne would have been the #1 draft choice of the L.A. Lakers, who instead used their pick on the great Gail Goodrich.-Wayne’s girlfriend at the time of his death was fellow USU student and Anaconda native, Judy Martz. Martz had participated as a speed skater at the 1964 Winter Olympics. Martz served as Governor of Montana from 2000 until this past November.-Wayne’s nephew, Rochi, plays for Anaconda High School and will be one of the state’s standout players again next season. Anyhow, I just wanted to tell you I appreciated your piece. I hope the memory of Wayne Estes lives on forever in Logan and in Montana.

Sincerely,Dave VisscherKBOZ Talk Radio/Bozeman, Montana(406) 587-9999visscher@kboz.com
