Weeklong events celebrating Asian culture end today
This week was Asian American Student Council Week. The Asian American Student Council held several activities to highlight the different Asian cultures.
On Wednesday, the group set up a table in the TSC Sunburst Lounge. The popular Asian film, “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” played on a TV next to the table. The members of the AASC handed out fortune cookies and sold different Asian merchandise, including glow-in-the-dark Buddha statues.
On Thursday the AASC sold Boba drinks and Asian desserts at the TSC. Boba are drinks with tapioca balls in them. Boba is traditionally made with milk tea, but on Thursday the council used fruit juice instead, making a kind of slushee.
Hsin Fang from Royal Express was there helping out. He said, “They began making Boba in Taiwan and it just exploded through Asia.” It is now spreading through the United States, becoming more and more popular.
At both events, the AASC handed out fliers and sold tickets to their third annual Tip-toe Into Asia Banquet, which will be held Friday, Jan 19. The banquet begins with a meal served by USU Catering Services. Food will be served at 6:30 p.m. in the TSC Ballroom, and the show will follow.
The show will include a professional Chinese dragon dance, a cultural fashion show, a guitar performance by Amy Nguyen and an AASC slide show. In addition to the Asian cultural presentations, the banquet will also highlight a variety of other cultures. There will be performances by the Middle Eastern Belly Dancing Club, Hipnotik, Eternity, an African drum and dance number and a performance by Crimson Idol runner-up, La.
“It’s all about celebrating culture,” said MJ Tran, a member of the AASC.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the banquet. Tickets are $8 and can be bought from the USU Ticket Office or at the door.
