Winning streak climbs to four for Utah State men’s lacrosse

The Utah State University men’s lacrosse team overcame a slow start to beat Boise State University 13-11 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies found themselves trailing Boise 5-2 at the end of the first quarter of play. Not willing to give up their three-game winning streak, the Aggies were forced to step up their level of play.

In the second quarter, the Utah State defense was able to clamp down and hold the Broncos scoreless, while the Aggie offense did some work of its own.

At the end of the half, the Aggies found themselves leading the Broncos 6-5.

“Our defense stepped it up in the second quarter and started playing how we usually do,” said goalie Jake Morrison.

The Aggies’ defense was led by Matt Polityka, Ben Evans and Kenny Cain, all of whom not only made key plays, keeping the Broncos scoreless in the second quarter, but also influenced the rest of their teammates to play harder, Morrison said.

In the second half, the solid defense from Utah State created more opportunities for the offense, which ultimately won the game for USU, Head Coach Eddie Vega said.

The offense for USU was led by Clint Carter and Kyle Fiat. Carter was able to score four goals and had two assists, while Fiat ended the game with three goals and five assists.

“It was the best attack we’ve had all year,” Morrison said. “Our offense kept the pressure on which made our job easier on defense.” Although the Aggies only won by two points, they completely controlled the second half, Morrison said. With the win over Boise State, the Aggies claimed their fourth straight victory and are expecting to increase their winning streak to five next week when they face BYU in Provo on Tuesday afternoon.

BYU, which is a division two squad, is one of the toughest teams in Utah, Morrison said. A win for the Aggies over the Cougars would show the rest of the division two league how good of a team Utah State really is.
