Women’s basketball beats Anchorage

The Utah State women’s basketball team took on the University of Alaska Anchorage in the final match of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Wednesday night. The Aggies came away with their second-consecutive victory of the season, beating the Seawolves 67-57. USU was led by star senior Devyn Christensen.

With the win, USU improved their season record to 2-3. Both wins for the Aggies came in the Great Alaska Shootout. The Seawolves record now stands at 3-2.

Christensen was the only USU player to get into double-digit scoring with 32 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and four assists. Junior Jennifer Schlott chipped in with seven points, three assists and three steals.  

UAA was led in scoring by Kylie Burns who finished with 14 points and eight boards. Jessica Madison added 12 points to finish second in scoring on the team.

The Aggies came out hot to start the first half and took the early lead and never let it go for the remainder of the game.

USU led 15-4 with 10 minutes remaining in the half. The Aggies pushed the lead to 18 points with a little more than six minutes left in the half behind the strong play of Christensen.  

The Seawolves chipped into USU and managed to cut the deficit to 28-21 with two minutes before halftime. The Aggies used the last two minutes to push the lead back to double digits to end the first half with a 35-25 lead.

The Aggies came out scorching in the second half and used a 15-5 run to go up 50-30 with 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Seawolves didn’t go away and cut the USU lead to nine points with just under three minutes left in the game after a Sasha King 3-pointer. UAA’s comeback came up short as USU hung on to secure their win.

The Aggies shot 44 percent from the field and shot 28 percent from beyond the arc. Christensen was 6-14 from 3-point land.

USU’s next game will be Nov. 27 when they take on in-state rival University of Utah on the road at 7 p.m.
