Women’s basketball grounds Redhawks
With first-place on the line, the Utah State women’s basketball hosted Seattle University on Saturday, capitalizing on a 28-point performance from senior Devyn Christensen to lead the Aggies past the Redhawks 67-62.
With the win, USU improves to 12-10 on the season and sole-possession of first place in the WAC with a record of 9-2.
It was a tough first half for the Aggies as the team shot 26 percent. Christensen led the charge for USU with 11 points. Seattle was led by Kacie Sowell, who had 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Redhawks took a 29-24 lead into halftime.
Christensen continued her strong play in the second half, knocking 3-pointers to keep the Aggies in the game. With 6:30 to play, USU erased an 11-point Seattle lead with a three-ball from Christensen. On the next possession Jenna Johnson tied the game 53-53 with a free throw.
USU stopped Seattle again and junior Jennifer Schlott gave the Aggies the lead with two free throws.
From there the game turned into a free throw battle. The Aggies hit theirs down the stretch while the Redhawks left points at the line, which cost them the game.
The Aggies will have a week off before their next game on Feb. 9 at the Spectrum. USU will host San Jose State at 7 p.m.
