Women’s B-ball closes season in SLC
The Utah State University women’s basketball team will travel to Salt Lake City to play Westminster College and University of Northern Colorado this weekend.
With two games remaining, Friday at 8 p.m. against UNC and Saturday at 8 p.m. against Westminster, the Aggies will have the chance to improve their wins from four to six.
For the Aggies, these two teams are the ones they want to end their season with, Head Coach Chalyce Stevens said.
The last couple of years the match-ups between USU and Westminster have been good ones, Stevens said, although the Aggies don’t quite know what to expect Saturday since this will be the first game of the year between the two teams.
Stevens said there are both advantages and disadvantages of not knowing much about them, such as intimidation and a team not playing hard because of pre-conceived ideas.
“We just try to focus on the advantages,” Stevens said. “Hopefully we’ll surprise them and come out with a win. They are a Division II team, so it’s good when we do well against them.”
Against UNC the Aggies won’t be able to use the element of surprise since the teams met at the beginning of this season, giving the Aggies one of their first wins with a score of 56-25.
The Aggies can’t go into the game thinking it will be an easy win, Stevens said, because its what UNC wants them to do.
For the most part, though, the Aggies feel confident about the match-up, she said, despite only playing with 10 players.
Although the Aggies don’t have as many wins as they would have liked, Stevens said they feel good about what they accomplished and how they’ve improved this season.
“Those who had played in past years noticed what a good team we had compared to the past,” Stevens said.
Stevens has even received compliments from other teams letting them know that they have really improved their program, but she said that’s not the most important part.
“Relationships you build from being on this team,” she said. “That’s what it’s all about. It’ll be nice to have a break, but I’m going to miss the girls a ton.”
