Women’s lacrosse earns weekend split

After getting off to what club president Michelle Taggart said was a poor start, the Utah State University women’s lacrosse club went on to win one of their two games Saturday in Ogden.

The Aggies started the morning with a 12-5 loss against the University of Utah before defeating Weber State University,

11-2.

Although the Aggies are disappointed with the loss, they were able to learn from their mistakes, Taggart said.

In the first half the Aggie defenders allowed Utah to control the game and ultimately score 11 goals.

“Our defense really hurt us,” Taggart said. “We were playing man-to-man and weren’t really sliding and using our body. We weren’t in the game.”

However, the Aggies didn’t finish the half on a complete down note, Taggart said.

Offensive players Lindsay Hawkins, who eventually ended the day with eight goals, and Kate Claslin both scored in the first half giving the Aggies a bit of a spark going into halftime.

In the second half USU came out to play, this time allowing the Utes only one goal the entire half.

“Our defense turned around the second half,” she said. “We really got into it.”

Even with the turn around in defense, the nine-point difference was too much for the Aggies to overcome. But they did close the gap with the help of Hawkins who scored two more goals in the second half.

Despite being defeated by the Utes, Taggart said it was the energy the Aggies played with in the second half which they carried into their next match against Weber.

On the first play of the game, after receiving the ball, Claslin drove down the field and scored, showing why she is USU’s leading scorer.

“It was awesome. She just smoked ’em,” Taggart said.

Claslin’s goal seemed to jump-start the team and set the pace for the rest of the game, she said. Hawkins also scored five more goals, along with two goals from Kelsey Schneiter and one from Lindsey Boren.

“We were really pumped up about the game and felt we played really good,” Taggart said. “But we still have a lot to work on.”
