Women’s lacrosse falls to Northern Colorado
The Aggie women looked to come out strong and build up a good lead on Saturday against the University of Northern Colorado at the University of Utah campus, but they were unable to pull out a win as they fell to the Bears 11-9.
It looked like the Aggies were going to achieve their goal when Jessica Alexander scored a goal soon after the game started. Then with another goal the Aggies were up 2-0 and looked to stay strong, but UNC turned on the intensity.
The Bears quickly answered USU’s lead with two quick goals of their own. Two more followed to put them ahead 4-2.
“We just needed to pick it up on defense,” said Kelsey Schneider. “We needed to be a little more intense. It really didn’t click. We also had problems in offense, just placing shots and timing.”
The Ags fought back before the half ended, but they were still down 6-4 when the whistle blew.
Any thoughts the Aggies may have had of coming out and taking over the game in the second half were effectively pushed aside as UNC scored in the first few minutes after the second half started.
Julie Ford scored off a penalty to bring the Ags back within two. They were able to stay within two for most of the second half.
However, they weren’t going to stay far behind for long. Alexander scored another goal and started a 3-0 scoring run for the Aggies.
Alexander’s goal was quickly followed by another from Diana Ford. The Aggies were within two again.
Ford scored another goal and brought the Aggies within one, 9-8. USU called a time-out with a little over six minutes left hoping to take control of the remainder of the game.
For a moment it looked like USU might be able to take the lead, but they missed a couple shots and one off a penalty. Hopes of a win dimmed when UNC scored again and the Ags were down by two, 10-8, once again.
One more goal was scored on each side before the end of the game giving UNC an 11-9 victory over the Aggies.
Next week USU will come home and face Weber State and the University of Utah on April 24, in their last games of the season.
“We’re looking for two big wins, by a lot. We want to run up the score and make ourselves feel better,” Schneider said.
