Women’s rugby club battles BYU in home finale

As its season comes to a close, the Utah State women’s rugby club prepares for its final home game.

Planning to go out with a win, the Aggie women will need to stay on their toes to defeat BYU on Saturday at 3 p.m. on the HPER Field.

Both the Aggies and Cougars participated in what Aggie Erica Hansen referred to as the grueling Las Vegas tournament last weekend. The Aggies came away with only one win, but a lot of ideas to improve their game, she said.

“We learned a lot from the tournament in Vegas,” she said. “We plan to implement this into our practices this week.”

The Aggies will need these skills come Saturday against BYU. The cougars came out victorious in Las Vegas and won the tournament.

However, Hansen said she feels the Aggies are more than capable of competing with the Cougars.

“I think our teams are fairly comparable,” she said. “We’ve won over half of our games and so have they.”

As a younger team, Hansen said the Aggies’ record should be viewed as impressive. She said the team seems to be getting an average amount of student support this year. However, she said the women would like to see more students out at their home games.

The support of the students would have an effect on school spirit when taking on BYU.

“We’ve really come together as a team this year,” Hansen said. “I think we’ve learned a lot and continue to learn throughout the year. We are coming out to win this last game.”

Hansen said the team has been practicing often this week, and that its practices have been real strong.

Saturday’s game looks to be one of intense competition between what Hansen said were two very talented teams.
