Women’s rugby club to finish fall season in Salt Lake City

The Utah State women’s club rugby team will play its last two games of the fall season against the Salt Lake City Select team and Northern Arizona University on Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Play begins at noon as the Aggies face Salt City for the fourth meeting between the two teams this year. Although USU has lost each game against Salt City, the last two matches have been really close, said veteran Georganne Done.

“This time we’re anticipating a win,” she said.

In their second game of the day at 1:30 p.m., the Aggies will have the chance to play a team they have not yet met – NAU.

Despite the lack of knowledge the Aggies have about their opponent, they think Arizona will be a physical and skilled crew, Done said, because most teams from the Arizona area are solid.

Aside from the difficulties back-to-back games present, USU will have to play its last two games without its star player, Becca Ogden, who is at a rugby camp with a regional select team. But hopefully that won’t bother the Aggies, Done said.

“We’ll be OK, because some of the new players are really picking up speed,” she said. “As long as they don’t think we’ll lose without her, I think we’ll be all right.”

But even if the games don’t go as planned for the Aggies, freshman Brooke Lambert said, they will feel good about how the season has gone.

“I think we’re doing pretty well,” she said. “We have a young team and there’s always room for improvement, but our coach thinks we’ve come a long way from where we started.”

Utah State currently sports a 7-6 record during the fall season, and a win against either Salt Lake City or the Lumberjacks would guarantee the team would finish with a winning record.
